Can You Be Successful Without Being An Asshat?
There are plenty of successful asshats. Problem is, no matter how successful they are, they’re still an asshat. There’s always been a lot of talk about how becoming successful means you have to be ruthless, unethical, and a downright asshat. Movies have portrayed this, popular fiction has portrayed this. Two of the most popular movies, Wolf of Wall Street and Wall Street, are homages to gaining success by being an asshat.
Well, Marie Forelo of MarieTV, believes that not only do you not have to be an asshat to be successful, but doing so can actually be detrimental to your business.
In today’s world, authenticity is making a comeback. Honestly, I think it’s well past time. The days of slick production, focus-group tested messages are over. With the explosive growth of social media, more and more ‘celebrities’, once thought to be unreachable, are embracing and interacting with their fans outside of controlled environments.
Personally, I love that some of my favorite people interact on Snapchat, Twitter, etc. In fact, I believe Twitter is one of the best things that’s happened in a long, long time. Fans can interact directly with their favorite personalities. Heck, I interact with local TV and Radio personalities all the time. I still geek out about getting a follow or a retweet from someone I admire.
The key to being successful is simply to be you. Be real, authentic, transparent, and messy as hell.
Just don’t be an asshat.
