Rules are made to be broken. All our lives, we’ve lived by the rules created by other people, whether it’s our parents, teachers, or employers, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting someone else’s rules. As a kid, we were taught to learn and obey them. There were rewards for following the rules and punishments for breaking them. The problem is, we get so caught up in the reward and punishment mindset that most of us don’t ever learn what rules are good for us and which ones hold us back.
Thus we end up with a society of mindless drones, going about their business day to day, working hard to stay quiet and in the middle of the herd.
What a crappy life.
In order to live a full life, there’s a few things you need to do.
Study The Rules
You cannot build a fulfilling life if you don’t know what the operating system is.
Just like anything else in life, you have to know where the starting line is before you can start your journey. Take inventory of all the rules that you live by, the obvious and not so obvious ones. Write them all down. Then reflect on each one and see if it fits the life you’re building. Looking at the operating system this way minimizes the influence of reward and punishment. Now you can choose whether or not to follow them.
There’s a certain power in being able to choose your life’s direction. There will still be consequences for breaking the rules. The difference now is that you will choose the consequences you face instead of living in fear of punishment.
Act With Intention And Integrity
If you choose to break the rules, own it. Don’t hide behind lame excuses like “I didn’t know” or “I didn’t mean to”. Take responsibility for every action and decision you make. When you act with intention and integrity you are affirming to the universe that you are in control of your life. You’re choosing to make life happen for you and not to you. Acting this way is the first step in creating a life of passion and purpose. You’ll be creating a more powerful version of you.
“ You’ll learn, as you get older, that rules are made to be broken. Be bold enough to live life on your terms, and never, ever apologize for it. Go against the grain, refuse to conform, take the road less traveled instead of the well-beaten path. Laugh in the face of adversity, and leap before you look. Dance as though EVERYBODY is watching. March to the beat of your own drummer. And stubbornly refuse to fit in.” – Mandy Hale
