“Nobody cares what I have to say.”

I’m sure you’ve said these things, or other things like them, to yourself plenty of times in your life. Hell, I know I have.

I also know I got sick and tired of kicking my own ass and holding myself back from unleashing all the awesomeness I had inside myself.

Aren’t you tired of it, too?

Aren’t you tired of living a mediocre life, dealing with regret, meandering from day to day because your self esteem sucks?

My low self esteem drove me to make stupid decisions in all areas of my life…in how I handled money, the relationships I chose, and even in my career.

The good news is that I learned how to boost my self esteem, build my self respect, and finally start moving towards living the life I always wanted to live.

Having healthy self esteem is important for a number of reasons.

  • Life is simpler
    Having low self esteem causes you to build mountains out of molehills. You have a tendency to internalize all of your challenges, mistakes, and missteps. You begin to believe that you are defined by your failures. When you begin to feel better about yourself, you understand that those are simply events and that they don’t define you.
  • You’ll be more emotionally stable
    You’ll stop seeking validation from outside sources. Accepting yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, helps you realize that you’re doing the best that you can with the tools that you have. You’ll also be able to identify what areas of your life you need to work on and you’ll have the confidence to do so.
  • You’ll be happier
    There is nobody happier than someone who doesn’t give a shit about what other people think about them. As the saying goes, other people’s opinions are none of your business. They don’t know your story, your struggle, or your progress. You’re happy with you and that’s all that counts.

How I Raised My Self Esteem…and You Can Too!

  1. Make Faster Decisions
    The quickest way to raise your self esteem is to start making faster decisions.¬†Too often we spend too much time agonizing over the simplest choices like: what to wear, what to eat, what to watch on TV. Being stuck in your head is one of the signs of low self esteem. Learn to make these decisions quickly and you’ll see your self esteem jump almost immediately.
  2. Take A Risk
    Even if it doesn’t work out, taking a risk teaches you that you CAN go after the things you want and if you stumble, it’s not the end of the world. The more risks you take, the more your confidence will increase.
  3. Start A Gratitude Journal
    This one is powerful. Every night, before you go to sleep, write down at least three things you’re thankful for. Then, on days when you need a little boost, go back and read all the awesome things you’ve written about yourself.
  4. Ditch Perfectionism
    Nobody is perfect, so quit fucking trying to be. Done is better than perfect. There is an episode of Friends where Monica goes to a tap class to find the woman who stole her credit card. The ending scene is Monica returning to the class. While doing the routine the instructor shouts out “You’re doing it wrong!” and Monica replies “At least I’m doing it!”. That’s the attitude you need. At least you’re doing it. Most people go through live observing from the couch and criticizing others because they don’t have the courage to do what you’re doing.So what if it’s not perfect….at least you’re doing it!
  5. Quit Comparing Yourself To Others
    Comparison is the thief of joy. Too often we compare ourselves at the beginning of our journeys with the results others have achieved. Nobody knows another person’s entire story, their struggles, how hard they worked, how many times they failed. Be proud of your progress.
  6. Serve Others
    Do something for someone else without expectation of getting anything in return. You’ve got a lot to share with this world, and serving others is a great way to do it.
  7. Never Give Up
    Don’t allow negative thoughts to overwhelm you. Remember, you’re doing the best you can with the tools that you have. Most of the important things in life were accomplished by people who kept going when there seemed to be no hope at all.

Slow and Steady Wins The Race

Remember, change doesn’t happen overnight. Like anything, it takes consistently practicing these seven things to build your self esteem. Keep going, day after day, and before you know it people will start remarking how confident you are and asking you what you did to get there.
